Some of our best national improvisers in their thirties or forties respectively are dedicating themselves to the given pieces with great concentration, vigour and passion. The younger generation considers Gumpert to be an instution. The working atmosphere seems friendly with every musician aiming at the best result possible. Zest reigns upon the making just like it should be in a workshop band. Enthusiasm prevails. The Language of the band can hardly be reduced to a single concept or a common denominator. Ulrich Gumpert dances many a dance. On the one hand he is a brooding loner, on the other hand he is an artist who is capable of integrating the soloists of his band, inspiring them to do their best. The verve of a Mingus and the boiling atmosphere of a Cannonball Adderley Band, the anarchy of the early Free Jazz orchestras, the contemplative mood of a Satie or the constructiveness of a Third Stream composer - one might be inclined to believe that Gumpert has a bit of them all. But frankly, this could not amount to a style of its own. Like all jazz musicians of artistic importance Gumpert is playing with his biography. He is residing in Berlin, Mitte, the name of the street is 'Am Zirkus' ('At the Circus'). Ulrich Gumpert resembles a high-wire artist juggling with elements of tradition and novelties as well as with melancholy and courage. Authentically. This man has got style.
